Masonry Repairs & Tuckpointing

Call Us For A Masonry Evaluation Of Your Fireplace or Chimney.

Keeping your chimney strong, beautiful, and standing tall decade after decade takes a little work on your part. After all, your chimney is up there and out there, day in and day out, taking on rain, wind, and sometimes snow, sleet, and ice. All of the moisture and fluctuations in temperatures can lead to masonry damage, especially where your mortar joints are concerned.

Brick and mortar are both porous, meaning they take in water naturally, but when excessive moisture is absorbed and temperatures fluctuate, water expands and contracts inside of the masonry, causing deterioration. Brick is stronger and able to last 100 years, sometimes more. Mortar, on the other hand, can deteriorate and wear away in just a couple of decades.

When mortar joints crack, crumble, or recede, they put unnecessary pressure on the rest of the chimney and allow rain and moisture to get deeper into the masonry. As a result, you could end up with considerable damage, including leak-related damage like a rusted fireplace damper, a flaking flue lining, or water stains on walls and ceilings near the chimney. The truth is, even small hairline cracks can lead to big damage in time.

That’s why it’s important that you have masonry repairs made as soon as you notice damage. The longer you wait, the worse the damage will be. Let Trinity Chimney Service take care of repairs for you — we’re fast and efficient and we stand behind our work.

We repair masonry and restore masonry chimneys and fireplaces using a couple of techniques known as tuckpointing and repointing/pointing.

Tuckpointing is a masonry restoration procedure we use when mortar joints are receding or damaged and portions of the brick are damaged. When tuckpointing a chimney or fireplace, we take two separate mortar mixes — one that matches the brick and one that matches the existing mortar. Then, we grind out damage and strategically pack fresh mortar into the brick and mortar joints to create a fresh, beautiful appearance and a stronger chimney. This process can be used to create the illusion of thinner mortar joints as well.

Repointing or pointing is similar in that we mix a specific mortar to match the existing mortar joints. However, pointing and repointing only address mortar joint damage, not brick damage. We grind out any damage and fill any voids, cracks, or receding areas in the mortar joints between the brick for a fresh look and a more water-resistant chimney.

If your masonry chimney is in really bad shape, we also specialize in full and partial chimney rebuilds. So no matter what’s going on, you’re in good hands with Trinity Chimney Service.

work should last you another 25-30 years, but we highly recommend investing in masonry waterproofing. Waterproofing is a fast and affordable investment that can save you so much money in the long run. Plus, the products we use are 99.9% effective, non-glossy, and protect the masonry against all kinds of moisture related damage and leaks for 10 years.
