Direct-Vent, B-Vent, What’s The Difference?

Direct-vent gas fireplaces have two separate pipes in their venting systems — one for bringing in combustion air from the outside and one for removing byproducts to the outside. These appliances can be vented through a wall or through the roof, and the double pipe setup eliminates performance problems related to inadequate intake air, draft, and carbon monoxide. With direct vent, you get a great deal of heat, and none of that heat is lost up the chimney.

B-vent gas fireplaces (also called natural vent) uses inside air for combustion and vents byproducts to the outside. These appliances can be vented through the roof, but if you have an airtight home or any competing appliances, you could experience problems with carbon monoxide and inadequate combustion air. Additionally, you can expect to lose some heat from the fire up the chimney.

When shopping for a new fire appliance, the many choices can be overwhelming — but it doesn’t have to be that way. The team here at Trinity Chimney Service specializes in hearth appliance selection and installation, and we’re Central Maryland’s local resource for all things hearth-related. Whether you want to discuss the advantages of wood vs. gas OR fireplaces vs. inserts vs. stoves, we’re more than happy to be to help.
